St. John's has adopted a teaching maths for mastery approach to Maths teaching and learning.
Teaching maths for mastery involves employing approaches that help pupils to develop a deep and secure knowledge and understanding of mathematics at each stage of their learning, so that by the end of every school year or Key Stage, pupils will have acquired mastery of the mathematical facts and concepts they've been taught and be able to apply and utilise these in a variety of ways, mediums and concepts. A mastery of a concept allows opportunities for it to be applied elsewhere within the mathematics curriculum without occupying vital working memory.
This concept is centred around children developing a deeper understanding of all concepts taught to them. Children will explore all concepts in numerous ways and representations and will utilise a range of concrete, pictorial and abstract resources and strategies as part of this.
These objectives form the core knowledge that should underpin all learning within each year group. It is essential that these objectives are learning thoroughly.
