12 Boys and Girls from St. John's took to the pitches of Leek Rugby Club today to represent the school in Tag Rugby in the annual Staffordshire Schools Schools Partnership - School Games Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Tournament
The team was drawn in Group 2 of the 10 team tournament along with, Woodhouse B; St. Werburgh's B; St Edwards A & Meir Heath A.
The team got off to a flying start with a superb 4-0 victory against Woodhouse B which gave the team an immediate uplift which carried on through to the rest of the afternoon.
Our 2nd game was against St. Edward's A team who took an early 2-0 lead before St. John's moved up a few gears and scored 4 unanswered tries to win their second game 4-2.
In the third game St. John's took on CADSSA rivals St. Werburgh's and St. John's won their second game in a row by a margin of 4-2.
The final group game would decide which team would top group 2 as St. John's played Meir Heath and the game was a tense and tight affair which lived up to the billing. Both teams had a multitude of chances to score several tries but the opposition last gasp defence and uncharacteristic handling errors kept the score to down. Both teams traded tries and in the end a 2-2 draw seemed like a fair result.
This draw left both teams with 3 wins and 1 draw from their 4 games and tries scored would determine who would win the group and who would be runner up. Sadly Meir Heath had scored 1 more try than St. John's and our team was demoted to Runner Up status and meant that we would play Group 1 Winners - St. Werburgh's A. in our Semi-Final.
In a gruelling and somewhat brutal encounter St. John's aimed to overcome CADSSA foes and the tournaments reigning champions but would ultimately come unstuck against a well drilled and skilled team. St. Werburgh's took the lead before St. John's quickly replied to even up the score. St. John's then went behind again to a try from the opposition before a few mistakes with the try line beckoning returned the ball to the opposition earlier than necessary. St. John's were unable to add to their tally of 1 try and St. Werburgh's ran out 4-1 winners.
A semi-final place in this tournament is an excellent result and the boys and girls who represented the school should be very proud of the manner in which they performed this afternoon. They showed courage, determination, skill, bravery and heart throughout the afternoon and most importantly, they all appeared to really enjoy the chance to chase an egg around a field for a few hours -scoring loads of tries and grabbing even more tags in the process.
Well Done Team!
