Phonics PlayPhonics Play is a website we use regularly during our Phonics’ lessons. Some games are free & these are a great way to keep practising your phonics.

Each week, I will be asking Year 1 to learn 5 words from the Year 1 High Frequency Words (Tricky Words).

On Friday we will have a challenge to see how many each pupil can spell correctly.

Reading is a very important part of your child’s learning.    The National Curriculum states that year 1 children must use phonic knowledge as the prime approach to reading unfamiliar words.    Therefore, your child will be provided with a book matching their current phonics phase to read at home.   Children also need to develop pleasure in reading, motivation to read, an increased vocabulary and an improved level of understanding. As they do this by listening to, and discussing, a wide range of poems etc at a level beyond which they can read independently, they will also bring home an extra book which they can read and share with an adult.    Children in Year 1 are expected to read for 10-15 minutes a day to be recorded in their reading record book which needs to be in school every day.    Reading books will be changed on a Tuesday and Friday.

Spellings are usually sent home every Monday and are tested the following Monday (text updates will be sent out if these days change).    Spelling homework can be completed on the sheets that will be uploaded to Padlet.

A further english and maths homework and occasionally a topic task will be uploaded to Padlet (see the link below)  with a phonics activity  every Friday to be completed by the following Friday.

Websites such as Topmarks ‘Hit the Button ‘provide online opportunities to support your child in developing their mental maths skills.
