Year 1

Here at St. John’s, we use Bug Club Phonics. This is a synthetic phonics program that provides everything needed to help children succeed in early reading.

It combines a comprehensive teaching program and fully decodable print books with an online reading world which includes eBooks, interactive assessments and games.

Each child has a unique homepage, and can log into it by following these steps:
1. Go to www.activelearnprimary.co.uk
2. Enter the login details.
3. Your child’s homepage will appear.

Please see your child’s Reading Record for your child’s username and password. The school  ID is as follows:

School ID: mamh

Each week your child will be allocated books and games that will reinforce the teaching and learning taking place in school. Printed copies of the books will also be sent home.

Reading is a very important part of your child’s learning.    The National Curriculum states that year 1 children must use phonic knowledge as the prime approach to reading unfamiliar words.    Therefore, your child will be provided with a book matching their current phonics phase to read at home.   They will also have access to an e-book using the Bug Club Phonics platform which is practising the phonemes taught that week. Children also need to develop pleasure in reading, motivation to read, an increased vocabulary and an improved level of understanding. As they do this by listening to, and discussing, a wide range of poems etc at a level beyond which they can read independently, they will also bring home an extra book which they can read and share with an adult.    Children in Year 1 are expected to read for 10-15 minutes a day to be recorded in their reading record book which needs to be in school every day.    Reading books will be changed and e-books uploaded to Bug Club Phonics every Friday.

Spellings are usually given out on a Monday and tested the following Monday (text updates will be sent out if these days change).    Spelling homework can be completed on the sheets that will be uploaded to Padlet or in the blue homework books.

A further  maths homework and occasionally a topic task will be uploaded to Padlet (see the link below)  along with a phonics games  every Friday to be completed by the following Friday.
